This post is not intended as a complete fix for mup sys blue screen freezes. You might however find some useful tips that you can try. From what people say and what I've read online, it seems that tracking down the actual cause of the mup.sys error is hardest part. Unfortunately, there are various different solutions for the same error. Yes, I know, irritating isn't it?

In addition, some people may experience a different issue, such as a system boot hang, which will not display the blue screen or an error message. In this case, locating the actual problem is even more difficult and is subject to trial and error. Surprisingly, most mup.sys issues are not even related to the mup.sys file!

The following are some causes for Windows XP/2000 mup.sys blue screen:

- Invalid or duplicate registry entries.

- Corrupted or faulty hard disk.

- Poorly installed software or hardware.

- Faulty or incompatible hardware.

- Virus/Malware infection of drivers/system files.

- Old drivers needing to be updated.

- Power supply failure or insufficiency.

- Faulty BIOS settings.

- Corrupted mup.sys driver.

There are countless others, so you would be extremely lucky to fix the problem on your first attempt. Here are some possible solutions you can try, but I wouldn't recommend trying any of these until you've at least backed up your hard drive and you're comfortable in making these changes. I'm no expert, so what you do to your computer is your responsibility (naturally).

1. Clean out your registry of redundant, corrupted or duplicate entries. You can use a registry cleaner to do this automatically. Click Here For More Info.

2. Try switching your hard disk with one that you know works.

3. Uninstall software/hardware if you suspect that it is the cause and clean the driver and registry with this tool.

4. Remove hardware that you suspect faulty, rolling back the driver too.

5. Scan your system of viruses and malware. Using multiple programs to scan your computer is better, since no program will detect all infections. Spybot S&D is a good free one to use.

6. Try installing the latest drivers for hardware on your computer.

7. Replace your power cord.

8. Reset to default BIOS settings, or upgrade.

9. Replace the possibly corrupted mup.sys driver with a new one (rename, delete and copy using the Recovery Console).

10. System Restore: restore to the last known good configuration (you will lose any updates since then.)

11. Removing and reinserting hardware: video, memory and sound cards etc.

You can also try a repair install which will replace all system files. But the chances of it being an actual mup.sys driver error are pretty slim. As a last resort you could also restore your entire computer, but rarely is this required. To check your PC of common errors and automatically fix them, try this Registry Cleaner Tool.

Quite often the ati2dvag blue screen crash (like the one above) happens when launching or playing video games. But it can also happen intermittently, usually without any warning which means any unsaved data will be lost. Occasionally you might see a warning message telling you that the ati2dvag driver has failed.

Perhaps the most probable case for this stop error message is a graphics card driver incompatibility. Often updating your graphics card with the latest driver will put this problem to bed. You can download drivers from the manufacturer's website. Be sure to check that you are indeed downloading the driver for your card.

Before you install the updated driver, be sure to remove the old driver first and restart your computer. Uninstall the driver correctly by going to Control Panel, then System, click on Hardware, then Device Manager and then choose to uninstall the device driver in Display Adaptors.

Your PC should revert to Windows default driver and should give you a good indication whether this is the actual cause for the ati2dvag blue screen or not. If your computer runs fine without any BSOD occurrences then commence installation of the new ATI driver.

Ensure when updating, that you're not running any other programs and you have no prescheduled antivirus scans running in the background. As an extra precaution you should consider disabling certain devices that share resources with your card.

If this does not work you might want to try disabling the ATI External Event Utility. Before doing this however you may want to consult a professional PC technician as it could cause other problems. First access, run command, and then type: services.msc.

Following this, access the ATI External Utility's Properties window and select disable for the Startup Type. Caution should be taken when making changes to your computer. If you're not comfortable in making changes, ask a professional.

Scan you computer for errors and device driver problems easily with this award winning program. Click Here To Find Out More.

A damaged or missing ntfs.sys file can cause the ntfs sys blue screen. You can replace the file with a new one by using the Recovery Console. To do so, you need your installation CD (some computers may have the Recovery Console function preinstalled). Firstly, you need to boot from the Disc and when you see the 'Welcome' screen you will need to select 'repair' by pressing 'R.'

For the Command Prompt, you need to select the installation you want to login to, then enter the administrator password (if you have one). Next, you want to rename the ntfs.sys file so that you can replace it with a new one. Enter the following commands (** being your CD ROM drive letter):

** \windows\system32\drivers

Then hit 'Enter'

ren ntfs.sys ntfs.old

Hit 'Enter' again. And then type:

copy **:\i386\ntfs.sys drive:\windows\system32\drivers

Once you've done that you can quit, remove the CD and reboot your computer. Alternatively, you can try a repair install which should replace the ntfs.sys file automatically. Unlike a full System reinstallation you will not lose any applications installed, and your settings and data should not be touched. It would be wise, however to make copies of all your data, in case something goes wrong. A repair install should replace all of Windows system files, but you will lose any Windows updates that were previously installed.

Possible hardware issues with video cards, RAM or hard drive can also cause the ntfs.sys blue screen. Test the memory and hard drive for any errors with a diagnostics application. You could also try swapping hardware to see if you can locate the source of problem. I wouldn't advise any manual changes done to your PC unless you know what you're doing. This goes for any system changes too, as you might cause damage to your computer.

If your computer has an AMD processor, then upgrading to a newer Windows Service Pack may trigger an endless loop of blue screens on startup. This is usually caused by a duplicate registry entry. If you experience blue screens after an update, you can install a patch to remove the problem. If BSODs still occur, you may want to first uninstall the update through the 'recovery console' and then installing the patch, before reinstalling the updated service pack.

To remove registry problems and other errors automatically download this registry cleaner.

An Atapi sys blue screen crash can occur when the atapi.sys file is infected with malware. If this is the case you may also notice that your online searches are getting redirected.

Getting a PC expert to fix the problem for you is the ideal solution, but if you plan to have a go yourself, ensure you at least make copies of important data on an external drive. Furthermore you should avoid going to sites that require passwords or personal information.

Be sure to run a full scan with an antivirus and anti-malware program to remove any malware present. Of course no program is 100% effective at removing malicious attacks on your computer, so it's a good idea to run several different ones. Spybot S&D is a good one to use and it's free.

If a scan reveals that the file is infected, don't delete it. Deleting it is likely to cause more problems, since it is one of the first drivers to load on boot up and is always in use. Instead send it to the vault/chest until further investigation. It's not that uncommon for antivirus software to throw up false detections now and again.

There have been several widespread cases where updating Windows has triggered the atapi.sys blue screen. This is not because updates have contained the infection (Microsoft aren't that stupid) but because of existing infections. This is just as well, since you may not have even realized you had an infection in the first place.

If you suspect that an update has caused recent blue screen errors, you can remove it through the recovery console. But this won't get rid of the infection. Replacing the infected atapi.sys file is perhaps the best option, but it's recommended to have a professional do it for you. Once the file has been replaced, scan your computer for any malware before you install any updates.

Malware isn't the only cause for atapi.sys BSOD's. CD emulation programs such as Daemon Tools are also potential causes. If you have any virtual drive programs installed, try removing them and see if the problem goes away.

This post does not cover every possible cause and fix for the blue screen error. If you are going to make any changes to your PC, ensure you have backed up your hard drive first. You are responsible for any changes that you make to your computer.

If you're getting a win32k sys blue screen error message, then note down any changes you've made to your computer recently. Usually adding or even removing hardware can cause this problem.

Device Drivers are your computer's way of talking to hardware. A suspected conflicting device driver can be uninstalled quite easily without causing harm to your computer.

If this doesn't fix it, run some diagnostics tools on your computer's memory and hard drive. Faulty RAM or a hard drive that's on its last legs can also be the cause. In addition you should check if your hard drive is making any unusual noises.

If diagnostics report nothing unusual then make sure that you've got the latest service pack installed and your BIOS is running up to date. XP users may see the win32k.sys blue screen of death when controlling menus in certain applications, using the keyboard. This can cause a dynamic loop in which the application simultaneously creates and deletes files causing the error.

A corrupt win32k.sys file can be fixed quite easily by renaming and removing the old file and replacing it with a new one. This can be done through the recovery console which is usually accessed from the installation CD that your computer came with. On some machines you can access it from the boot menu if it has been preinstalled.

A word of warning: Don't attempt to make any changes to your computer without backing up data first. Manual changes that you do make could result in irreversible damage (worse case scenario) and loss of data. It's always better to leave this kind of stuff to a trained PC technician or someone who knows what they're doing.

Another potential cause for the win32k.sys stop code is a corrupt Virtual Memory. This can be enabled or disabled by going into:

My Computer>

Properties>

Performance>

Advanced>

Virtual Memory.

After making changes you will have to restart your computer.

This article does not intend to cover every possible scenario for the win32k sys BSOD. If you plan to make changes to your computer, you do so at your own risk. Good luck.

This simple guide on how to fix blue screen of death (BSOD) will hopefully put you in the right direction for putting a stop to, perhaps the most annoying crash of all. Blue screen error messages are typically thrown up when an illegal operation has been performed in which Windows can’t recover from.

Dissimilar to other error messages that you may encounter such as DLL, l sass.exe and Dr Watson errors etc, the BSOD does not allow you to exit the error message without restarting the computer.

You will get a message at the top of the screen stating that ‘Windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer’ – This is fair enough, but it means that you won’t have a chance to save any data to your hard drive prior to the error. Below that message you should see a message that looks like the following:

IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL

UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_VOLUME

NTFS_FILE_SYSTEM

The number of different error messages is numerous, but this as well as the STOP code you see two-thirds of the way down, are essentially what’s going to help you fix blue screen of death. The alternative is to check the system event log, but reading the minidump may need a little more expert knowledge.

An example of a blue screen error message followed by possible fixes:

IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL

If you see this error message after installation of new hardware/software, try first installing an updated driver and secondly (if it doesn’t work), removing the hardware/software and see if this fixes the problem. An incompatible or faulty device driver is usually thee culprit. Ironically an updated driver could actually be the cause for a BSOD. You should always update device drivers, but on some occasions they can cause problems.

If you’ve been running a piece of hardware/software and it’s never caused issues and then all of a sudden you start getting problems after an update, try rolling back the updated driver. Don’t worry, Windows should automatically keep a previously installed driver and it should revert back to that one automatically.

Hardware and software issues account for most instances of BSOD. Windows is designed to work with tons of different hardware and software, so it’s hardly surprising that something can go wrong. Device driver errors and invalid registry entries cause incompatibilities since they are the operating system’s way of communicating with hardware and software.

To fix driver errors and other causes for blue screens automatically click here.

If you’ve tried manually updating or rolling back a device driver that you suspected was the problem and you are still getting error messages you can try the following:

1) Changes to the BIOS settings can cause timing issues. A full BIOS reset to their default settings may rid any problems. In addition you may also want to check if there are any updates available from the manufacturer.

2) Is your OS up to date? Check that you have the latest service packs installed. If not, you can download and install the latest updates from Microsoft’s website.

3) Revert back to a Last Known Good Configuration. This should be considered only as the last line of defense as you will lose any changes you’ve made since then. You could also reinstall your PC from scratch!

This is not meant as a full-proof guide on how to fix blue screen of death. Make sure you back up anything important before you make any changes to your computer. If you plan to make any manual changes to your PC, you do so at your own risk.
